Arizona Death Penalty

Updated Information on Comer Execution, Protests and Vigils, and Annual Meeting

Robert Comer's execution is scheduled for May 22, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. Below is a list of events (protests and vigils) related to the execution. In addition, following the execution, CAADP will hold its annual meeting, at which elections for the Steering Committee will take place. For information about any of these events, please contact the indivduals listed below, or contact Dennis at (602) 400-4025 or president@azabolitionist.org or Claudia at (520) 622-3339.

Please note: CAADP is not sponsoring any civil-disobedience activities. Individuals who wish to engage in civil disobedience are, of course, free to do so on their own, but all protests listed below that CAADP is sponsoring will be lawful.

Tucson Vigil, Monday, May 21, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

CAADP is organizing a protest in front of First Christian Church in Tucson on the corner of Euclid and Speedway from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. You're welcome to come, but please consider calling Claudia at (520) 622-3339 so we can have enough signs for people attending.

Phoenix Prayer Vigil, Monday, May 21, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

With the permission of Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, concerned Catholics and others who oppose the death penalty will meet and pray from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30pm on Monday, May 21, on the Diocesan Center lawn at 400 East Monroe (just east of the Basilica) in downtown Phoenix. The event is organized by the local chapters of Pax Christi, USA. For information, contact Inge at (602) 952-0562 or Dan at (602) 354-2168.

Florence Protest, Tuesday, May 22, 9:00 a.m. (arrive at 8:00 a.m.!)

There will be a peaceful protest outside of the Florence Prison Complex, where death row is located. The event will take place in Florence at the corner of AZ 79 (also known as North Pinal Parkway) and Butte Road. Although the protest begins at 9:00 a.m., we ask that you arrive as close to 8:00 a.m. as possible. Unfortunately, the Arizona Department of Corrections has established a checkpoint and requires identification. Formerly, the gift shop where we will be protesting was outside the prison's security area, but the layout has changed, and the shop is now within the checkpoint. Please bring your ID. (We realize that this is undesirable, and we will try to work with ADOC to improve this arrangement for any future executions.) We encourage you to call Dennis at (602) 400-4025 or president@azabolitionist.org or Claudia at (520) 622-3339 to make sure there aren't any last-minute changes. You can also contact us to plan any carpools.

Annual Meeting and Elections, Tuesday, May 22, After the Execution

After the execution, come to the CAADP annual meeting and elections. CAADP will have to turn this unjust execution into a catalyst for change, and we need you to attend the annual meeting to make sure that happens! The annual meeting and elections will take place after the execution at the L & B Inn at 695 South Main Street in Florence. At the annual meeting, there will be nominations and elections for the CAADP Steering Committee. All members are welcome to attend.

Bisbee Event, Tuesday, May 22, 12:00 p.m.

In Bisbee, individuals are planning a post-execution event at noon, for half an hour, in the garden of St. John's Church, Bisbee.
