Death Penalty Speaker Series
February 21, February 22, and March 7
The Law Students Against the Death Penalty, Criminal Justice and Security Program, and the Criminal Law Association will be holding a three-part speaker series. The events are free and open to the public. Each speaker will discuss the death penalty from different perspectives. The speakers include Ray Krone, the 100th former death row inmate freed because of innocence since 1976; the Honorable Stanley Feldman, former Arizona Supreme Court Justice; and Dr. Kathy Norgard, author of Hard to Place and a member of CAADP's Steering Committee.
- Ray Krone, a man found innocent of capital murder after a decade in prison. The event takes place on February 21 from 7:30-8:45 a.m at the University of Arizona College of Law, Room 139. Breakfast will be provided. CAADP is cosponsoring this event. Prior to Ray Krone's arrest, conviction, and sentencing for capital murder, he had no criminal record. Instead, he had been honorably discharged from the military and had worked in the postal service for seven years. On April 8, 2002, after he had served more than a decade in prison, DNA evidence proved his innocence. Ray is the 100th former death row inmate freed because of innocence since the reinstatement of capital punishment in the United States in 1976. Please join us to learn from Ray Krone and his harrowing story.
- Hon. Stanley Feldman, a former Arizona Supreme Court Justice's view on the death penalty. This speech takes place on February 22 from 12:20-1:30 p.m. at the University of Arizona College of Law, Room 146. Lunch will be provided. Justice Feldman was appointed as a justice of the Arizona Supreme Court on January 20, 1982, and served as the Chief Justice from 1992 to 1997. On February 22, Justice Feldman will share his opinions and perspective on the death penalty.
- Dr. Kathy Norgard, "Guilty but Innocent: Other Aspects of the Death Penalty." The event will take place on March 7 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the University of Arizona College of Law, Room 146. Dr. Norgard, a psychologost and author of the newly released book Hard to Place, offers compelling insight into the quicksand that occurs when medical disorders and legal consequences meet. She will share part of her riveting personal account, the story of a devoted mother fighting to save her son from the execution chamber. Continuing Legal Education credit is available for $15, which includes a copy of Dr. Norgard's book. To sign up for CLE, please contact Jane Eggers at eggers@email.arizona.edu.
