Kathy Norgard — a CAADP founding member, an officer for the CAADP Steering Committee, and a former recipient of the Abolitionist of the Year award — has released a new book, Hard to Place: A Crime of Alcohol.
Hard to Place is a unique personal account about coping when a family member is charged with a capital crime. It reveals the fine line between what seems like a clear case of guilt amid doubts as to whether justice is served, given the legal versus the medical and psychological perspectives of the crime and the complicated issues of guilt.
Dr. Norgard, a psychologist and author of two other books, offers compelling insight into the quicksand that occurs when medical disorders and legal consequences meet. She draws the reader into the riveting story of a devoted mother fighting to save her son's life after an incomprehensible tragedy strikes and she embarks on the most painful journey of her life.
Hard to Place addresses unspoken problems with fetal alcohol syndrome, the justice system, the death penalty, medical/psychological diagnoses and the victimization of the families of the condemned.
Dead Man Walking author Sister Helen Prejean, writing in the book's foreword, says Dr. Norgard's story "nudges you, inspires you, deepens your wisdom, calls to you to be big-souled and summons you to do something great — no matter what the challenges."
